The Strange Case of a Rwanda Refugee Applicant. Rwanda and the role of alternative media. Double Standard on Terrorism.
Lisa Winter-Card, Ann Garrison, Keith Bolender
Immigration lawyer Lisa Winter-Card discusses the strange case of Rwandan refugee applicant, Jean Berchment Habinshuti, who faces deportation
The case is strange because Habinshuti served as secretary to Prime Minister Agathe Uwilingiyimana, who was assassinated in 1994, and was widely perceived as a moderate. The present Rwandan government has a well-earned reputation for persecution of dissent. As Ms Lisa Winter-Card makes clear, Mr. Habinshuti is at risk.
In an unusual turn of events, KPFA host and journalist Ann Garrison interviews our host, Phil Taylor.
Edward S. Herman identified Western reporting on Rwanda as the greatest victory of the propaganda system in recent decades. In the context of trials over Rwanda, Phil and Ann explore the challenges faced by alternative radio programmers in countering the corporate media consensus.
Phil interviews Keith Bolender, author of "Voices from the other side," an oral history of terrorism against Cuba, and "Cuba Under Siege."
Keith talks about the arrest in Cuba of four terrorists based in Miami, Florida, who were planning to attack a Cuban military base in April 2014.
He also discusses the U.S. double standard on terrorism with regard to the "Cuban Five."

Cuba embargo blocks medicine: The purpose of a siege is to hurt people. Phil Taylor Commentary: Honour veterans by preventing war.
Medicine - contemporary medicine that can save lives - is not getting to Cuba. Keith Bolender, author of "Cuba under Siege" explains. Cuba is now closer to Latin America than it has ever been, despite continual U.S. attempts at isolation.
Phil and Keith also discuss other topics, such as Puerto Rican nationalism, and the parallels between Cuba and Ireland.
After lamenting the unfortunate dominance of Rob Ford scandals in the media on this important day, Phil asks "How do we remember veterans?"
Phil remembers an old Toronto Star article by an up-and-coming journalist about veterans trying to pawn their medals. The truth is that we pat soldiers on the back, and then forget about them.
We can glorify war, or we can try to prevent it. Only by preventing it can we honour the victims of war.
This is not an argument between pacifism and violence. It's an argument to obey international law.
